The Publick House, Tavern and Inn
Reviews
Six of us were brought to a table that had pork chop bones under it. I asked the Manager if he could removed the bones before we sat down. He gave me a funny look, but had someone remove the food scraps after 6 minutes. When the server brought rolls to the table, there were only 3 rolls for the 6 of us. When I brought this to the Manager's attention, he said "Don't tell me how to run the restaurant!" I told him I would as long as he wasn't capable of doing the job himself. Needless to say there was no tip and we haven't returned. Don't be fooled by the renovated building, the service is poor and the management doesn't care.
EAT OUT OF A TRASH BIN BEFORE EATING HERE; STAY AWAY!!! There is a BK & Wendy's very close by where you will have better food...this Publick house has slightly above edible food at 3 times the price. Christmas Eve Lobster Bisque soup was only 1/2 a bowl, was only light cream with a hint of some fish stock, and ridiculous at $8. NOT 1 PIECE OF LOBSTER OR SHELLFISH. Pan seared fish was very well done and mashed potatoes tasted out of a box for $30. Advised there was no kids menu but pizza and chicken strips...they really meant a whole pie & fries with 2 pieces of chicken barely cooked. Fra Diavlo was 1/2 lb of spaghetti & 3 pieces of shellfish. If the waiter wasn't too busy trying to spin his tray out of boredom we almost were able to flag him down, but needed the help of another table. Never asked how food was or returned for anything other than the check. BTW this bill was $101 dollars for 2 adults & 2 children under 5.
My husband and I had a lovely experience here. We were passing through the town of Chester on our way to a strawberry farm. We had to come back because the town looked to be very quaint and a nice place to walk around. The hostesses were both very nice, and gladly let us sit outside on the porch. It is a nice and comfortable view of their little main street. Our waitress was what made our experience the best. I can't remember her name, but she is originally from Minnesota (we were visiting from WI) and we had a lot in common. She told us about the restaurant and gave us post cards with its history on them. Because we are temporarily in NJ for the summer, she introduced us to some of their local beers. She checked on us regularly, and was all about having some conversations with us. She genuinely was there to give us a great experience. She was also very nice to the table behind us with kids. We give her a thumbs up on making our visit wonderful! We both enjoyed every bit of our food. We each got a salad, butternut squash soup, and mozzarella/basil appetizer. Exceptional food that is well worth the price, and it looked pretty too. If you're passing through quaint little Chester, we would suggest making a stop here!
I stopped in with my family tonight and we were delighted that the chef allowed us to order off the menu. In this case my daughter and I had Chicken Francese (perfectly cooked). I also had an excellent house sauvignon blanc. My son had the children's pasta. And to round out a nice dinner, Chef Jeremy stopped by to make sure everything was okay. Nice touch!! The service from Sally was excellent.
Friendly service and good food.
