Purple Onion
Reviews
This was our first visit to the Onion and hate to say will probably be the last. Made our way up from Greenville, SC in hopes of a pleasant relaxing evening. We phoned ahead and told them to put us on the waitlist and we would be staying for the band. Upon finishing dinner and desert I was placing an order for an after dinner drink before the band came on and waitress said we would need to leave our table or take our drink over by the window. I have been dining out for over 30 years and have never been asked such a thing. Food was very average and obviously they don't get how to treat people. Its like they are herding cattle...Skip it!
My 93 yr. old mother was visiting me and I took her on a tour of 3 of my favorite places. Landrum, Tryon, and on to Saluda where we had lunch. " The Purple Onion", the waitress did not tell us her name so can't share that, but the service was terrible, she told us there special for the day was grilled chicken, corn black beans with other spices in a wrap. chips and salsa on the side. We asked about sharing and she said that was ok since it was a lot of food and the warp was cut in half. Put a couple glasses of water on the table, no ice which is ok with me, my mother likes ice in her water. then the wrap appeared with two plates about 8 chips and a 3oz container of salsa. The wrap was cold tasteless .( i have had delicious wraps) this one sucked. Not wanting to upset my mother I did not say anything. We asked for hot sauce just to give it a little taste. My glass was completely empty had to call her for some more water which was very warm. Finished this horrible meal and left. Would not recommend this place to anyone. A lousy ending to an otherwise perfect day.
Two friends and myself took a little day trip to Saluda from Greenville. One used to live in Tryon, and had dined at the Purple Onion previously and highly recommended it. Going in is like going back in time, with the old original ceiling and bare brick walls. Great atmosphere. Of course the dessert case is right by the door, so you're thinking about that all during lunch! I had the Apple Brandy Beef Burger with Caesar Mayo, lettuce, tomato, pickle spear and tostito chips. This was a new taste for me, and I found the Caesar mayo to be a delectable choice. Of course, after going by the dessert case, we all had to partake of a sweet treat. All were wonderful, but I was partial to my thin pecan pie, which was rather like a pecan pie pizza! Service was pleasant and prompt. Overall great place, though a tad on the expensive side for a small town like this. I'm sure we'll be back!
Food very good, all fresh organic vegetables,a refreshingly twist to originality on the chefs part. Friendly waiters and waiteresses, you can order lemon water, beer or wine of your choice. Also a wide variety of entertainment on any given day,, thats just an added bonus at this small town but upscale chic restaurant. Definately an experience worth trying.
Arugula and wild mushroom pizza is delicious!
