01-03-14 Having just moved here my girlfriend and I decided to try this quaint little bar/restaurant while we were driving around. We arrived around 4:30pm and instead of sitting in an open booth went right up to the bar, which, Im guessing because of the snow and workers being off, was quite full. We found two empty seats and waited...and waited and waited and waited and waited....no one came to help us. Which was pretty damn odd considering there were TWO (very attractive female) BARTENDERS working and both of them saw us come in and sit at THEIR bar!!! We know they saw us and we know they did NOT CARE if we waited or not because they were DEEP in conversation and consumed with counting THEIR TIPS!! I could not believe it and the guy next to us told us to get use to it... my girlfriend laughed because she knew I refused to put up with lousy service; if you expect a tip of 15-20% of my bill - you had better - at the very least- acknowledge my presence and serve me promptly. None of which occurred- we sat there and watched them then I attempted to get their attention but they continued to ignore us. When we finally got their attention I asked if they were working and I got smart retort of, "Yeah, why - you want something"? I told her I was sorry I interrupted their conversation and we got up and left at ... seems from the below reviews this is NOTHING NEW TO THAT ESTABLISHMENT - HEY MANAGEMENT - WAKE UP!!!
The Lodge has been a go-to place for my wife. I have never been thrilled with the food and at times it was just bad. Last night, however, I had a meal that rivaled anything I have eaten in Harford County. We ordered a lobster spring roll, the braised beef and I had a shark dish on Orzo with Casino butter and a Buerre Blanc sauce. Excellent. Really, really good. Real food crafted by a real chef or at least a real cook and someone who cared. I requested no butter and still loved it. The atmosphere here is pretty cool. A good vibe, nice outside bar with music or a DJ usually on the weekends, nice fireplace outside and in as well. We were made to wait for a 2 top though there were a dozen ( yes I counted) tables of 6-8 that were clean, set and empty. After 15 minutes at the bar waiting I finally approached the hostess who explained they were for larger parties and that there were 3 parties of 2 ahead of us. The manager, a nice enough chap. gave me the same answer. I was surprised how much "encouragement" it took for him to make an exception which he finally did. This visit, however, was about the food. Pleasantly surprised and very good!
On the outside the Lodge in Hickory looks like a Swiss chalet turned redneck bar. However, the food was very good and presented well on the plate. The menu is limited, but they had a good mixture of steaks, sandwiches, and local seafood. They have a full bar, with unfortunately a limited wine list. It is worth trying and perhaps we'll go again.
