Rosebud American Kitchen & Bar
Reviews
Went there twice - first time was a disappointment so we tried a second time. Still weren't impressed. Primarily I don't like the service. The waiters are slow to take orders and the bus staff seems new to the industry. They didn't know which table had ordered the food they were carrying and were clumsy in placing dishes on the table. The food isn't spectacular. The burger was very salty and the fries too thin. The fried chicken is only just alright, and the zucchini salad is basically summer squash stir-fried in oil. Just generally unimpressive, with wait staff that made us feel awkward both times.
Came in with a group of 4 early on a Sunday for brunch. My friends were amazed that I had never been to Rosebud's before, even in its earlier incarnation. There is definitely a gastropub element to this place now with a focus on higher end diner food. The first thing that will shock you is the size of this place, it is quite large as it extends well beyond the chrome diner cart located on the street. This place is not nearly as small as it appears on the outside. Our waitress seemed to have a bit of an attitude at first, but it was Sunday morning for all of us I guess. Kentucky Iced Coffee Cocktail - This thing was straight gasoline and it was exactly what I needed. This is not for the faint of heart though. Thick Cut Brown Sugar Bacon - While I like the idea in concept I really prefer the thinner and crispier style of bacon. Would love to try the brown sugar glaze on a crispier slice. Bacon Scallion Hush Puppies - These were a highlight of the meal. It could have been plated a little better (the plate looked half empty). The flavors were spot on though. If you are a fan of bacon and cornbread you are sure to liked these little crunchy bites of goodness. Texas Brisket Hash - A great choice for a hearty brunch. A mixture of eggs, potatoes, some veggies and some tasty brisket. This dish was hearty but not overly greasy or fatty. Eggs Benedict - The one we tried was topped with spinach. The hollandaise sauce and the english muffin were both on point and tasted very fresh. Another great choice.
Yes, it's hipster-ish but ignore that, because why should they get all the good spots? This place performed a major reno prior to opening where they connected, via arts most dark, the old rosebud bar to the diner car. The bar section is unrecognizable with lots of wood, wall seats and tables along one wall - curved around to the rear and opposite the massive bar. Given my single trip I can't say what the diner car looks like but you've got to have some surprises for future visits (watch out for the clowns, they.... never mind that, no clowns have been seen for months). They have a wonderfully curated selection of beers and spirits. They have barrel-aged cocktails, so obviously you've got to try them, but don't forget they've got some great food as well. Some of it is deconstructed diner fare but it's done well, so who cares? Lastly... make sure you eye the confections under glass on the way in. I can vouch for the lemon meringue, but the rest looked tasty as well.
With so many options in Davis Square, I would say this is my favorite. The chef is very creative with his smoker and deserts. The diner in the front is a beautiful and well kept piece of history. The main restaurant has been recently renovated and is very comfortable. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommended, not just by me, but real critics.
Great selection of beers and 'southern' food. Good rack of ribs (a little dryer than I like) and solid fried chicken. They have some fun bourbon cocktails as well
