If you do find yourself driving on California Highway 111 near Indio - called Grapefruit Boulevard as you go further, past Coachella, either heading toward or away from the weirdly wonderful Sultan Sea, or for any reason, I recommend Taqueria Guerreo. It is a simple order-at-the-counter Mexican food joint with standard beef and pork dishes like carne asada and birria, pork carnitas and al pastor, soft tacos with GOOD homemade soft corn tortillas, and wonderful looking soup (didn't try the soup). They had a specials board with very authentically named dished we had to ask about to understand what they were. The special gordita with roasted chilis and cheese inside was really good. There is a great selection of salsas, and the place is quite popular at lunchtime. I had an asada taco and birria burrito plate; both were really good.
While driving and studying all across southern California with a large group of folks, we stopped here for lunch (back in 2005 there just weren't other options). Being the only vegetarian, I got a questionable look when I asked for something sans meat, but they delivered a great couple of tacos that made me go back for a few more before we moved on. I would have given this place 5 stars if it weren't for my hotel roommate getting the Thailand trots that lasted for over a week. She then got the tour of toilets across southern California. Good thing we were busting hump on daily 3+ mile hikes so I was able to sleep through all the late-night bathroom breaks.
Another really great place for a authentic Mexican meal! Again, lots of locals which spells GOOD FOOD. I have had burritos and combo plates. All really good. Very good salsa bar too, and its free. With the meals your REAL tortilla chips are free too. Great place to eat, you won't be sorry.
My meal was just plain.
Chilaquiles and birrea were both really good. Green and roasted salsas were tangy with kick. Clean. Very accommodating staff. A Mecca must-do.
