This Larry's BBQ is first rate; the pork is smoked for at least 6 hours till its tender, smoky and delicious. The staff are friendly, professional and efficient. The ambience and decor are inspired by Old School BBQ Provencál with shellacked lumber booths "we made the seating ourselves - well we didn't, but someone did" surrounding tables covered with strangely yellowed coating of thick resin that held in some kind of tortured suspended state of animation a hodgepodge collection of memorabilia - old menus with old prices, pictures, matchbooks, cardboard coasters for Pilsner beer glasses - all lovingly preserved in a half-inch thick costing of (homemade too?) resin. For art, the walls were stamped with a collection of priceless old movie posters from back in the day, with Mel Brooks "Blazing Saddles" to (someone queue the banjo and squeal ...) "The Deliverance", Clint Eastwood and his kindred movie character bad asses, tough guys with easy broads - some of the best BBQ-worthy classics of all time. And if you're wondering how they manage to pull it all off - it's not by raising prices. Prices are very reasonable, especially for the quality of the food and the service. After my very first outstanding lunch, I sat there scratching my head, wondering why the hadn't changed the name of the place and let loose the burden of association with the other Larry restaurants that weren't even in the same league with this outstanding complete barbecue experience - surely it would double the business! Then, awkwardly I got it. I realized, it's a family thing. They're doing their part to raise up the reputation of the other locations. And given their uncompromising commitment to doing whatever it takes for their customers to enjoy a delightful mealtime together, it stands to reason they were applying that same principle regarding the name of the place. They keep it to support the family, and I'm sure they did it without even once wishing that the others would show some appreciation for their contribution and unwavering commitment, and just try a little harder in their own restaurants. Nope, I expect they left that part up to God. I am running out of perfectly reasonable excuses why I need to go up to Ozark every week -- it's become my second favorite BBQ joint in the Wiregrass. It's a privilege to enjoy this kind of friendly, family-feeling place where you just know they would gladly work overtime anytime just to see everyone in a time warp, enjoying themselves like they were transported back 25 years, when the Internet was a curiosity instead of well on its way to turn into (the Internet of) everything. Good old times like this come right back, just like riding a bicycle. Well, maybe just with GPS though, please.
I would have given 4 stars but they stopped smoking their meat over hickory and started cooking over natural gas. The food is still good but just isn't the same as it used to be.
Good food, good price, great service.
