The Old Mill Cafe

I will have to say that the food was excellent and we have been there before and it was also just as good. But this most recent time we have gone there as part of a holiday to Tairua our food took 2 HOURS to arrive at our table and no one even came out to tell us that something had gone wrong or to appologise or let us know, they just all walked past and served others. We werent the only ones waiting either, and just because a couple had complained about the wait they were served their food first after having arrived at least half an hour after we did. At the end we finially got our food and then went to pay and just mentioned it would have been nice to have been let know if that there was such a wait or atleast have someone say something, and all we got was a rude waiter who gave us a pile of excuses such as they were short staffed and other restaurants have been closing down and arent open today so we have an extra large number of people to serve... NOT a sinle appology at all, just rudeness which did ruin the evening extremely despite the good food. Very unhappy!!
We went there for dinner yesterday (4th march 2013). Excellent and friendly service, great food - we had the catch of the day with risotto - reasonebly prices, nice atmosphere. We will go there again today, because the meals on the menue sound very interesting and promising.
NOT FAMILY FRIENDLY I stopped in to get some ice-creams for my family and was told quite rudely that they don't have kids size cones and that I would have to buy my 1 and 2 year olds $5 cones. I was very disappointed who sells ice-cream without having an option for kids?
The perfect place to relax after a day at the beach, located conveniently at the base of Paku I had a Moroccan chicken salad off the specials board which was a fabulous mix of fresh grilled pineapple, sticky chicken pieces, warm roasted nuts with mixed salad and some kind of dressing, my friend had the Thai prawn curry and he was attempting to lick the bowl as discreetly as possible we washed it down with a local ale - Coromandel Good as Gold ale which was recommended by the owner. we finished with a Kapati ice cream cone and fantastic coffee looking out at the boats in the water the service was warm and personal, the owners seem excited about the local produce created in the area and also operate a deli - we took home some of the Normandy Camembert and olives for nibbles with drink, the building is a beautiful historic old mill set in a lovely garden that over looks the bay. We will be back next time we are in Tairua, the Tapas and cocktail nights sound fun
My partner and I were in Tairua on a glorious day in the middle of winter looking for somewhere to have lunch. Unfortunately the majority of the restaurants outside of Tairua township were 'closed for winter' with the exception of the 'Old Mill Cafe'. Although the menu isn't extensive it covers all the basis. My partner and I both choose the fish and chips with a light beer batter, a beautiful bottle of Pinot Gris and a flat white each. Everything, service, surrounds and most importantly the food was superb. After a walk up to the top of Paku Hill, The Old Mill is a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the beautiful Coromandel. Without question we will be back. Dave and Alison
