I actually didn't know the etymology of the word "brasserie" - it turns out to mean brewery originally - and from places identifying themselves as brasseries in the UK I'd formed an image of slightly upmarket French restaurants. So it was actually a bit of a surprise to arrive at Brasserie de Monaco and find it was very much a bar, which on the Sunday evening we went also had a live DJ (and accompanying bongo player!), a mostly young crowd, and a sort of party atmosphere about it. I initially felt a bit out of place with our 2 year old in tow, but we were welcomed by the staff regardless. They brew their own beer, I stuck to the pilsner, which was embarrassingly cheap during happy hour (3.50EUR for a pint, normally 7). The quality was pretty decent, I thought - I was happy to order a second pint. The food leans towards bar food in style - the kinds of things designed to accompany beer, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. This was the first time for me to try barbajuans, pretty much the national dish of Monaco as I understand it, and they did indeed go very well with the beer. We actually sat inside as it was a bit quieter, but the vast majority of the other customers were seated on the terrace outside (where there was also a small stage for the live music), just a stone's throw from where all the yachts are moored. This place is clearly a bit of a Monaco institution, and a good place to head for if you're looking for somewhere lively and upbeat, even on a Sunday.

An amazing end to our short Monte Carlo day trip. After traveling in France for 2 weeks it was a refreshing change to have good quality craft beer. Delicious wheat beer and pilsner on tap. The atmosphere is and music is great!

Love this place. Tend to come back most years - very reasonably priced considering the surroundings, especially in happy hour. Food is pretty good, the beer brewed onsite is great, and it's always a highlight of our trips to the Cote D'Azur to spend a couple of hours relaxing here, having a couple of drinks and a bite to eat, looking out over the harbour. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place, and I have done to several friends.
