The Old English Pub
Reviews
I don't know what place the complainers here ate at! We've eaten at the Old English Pub many times over the past three years; we always had a wonderful meal, whether it was fish and chips, seafood chowder, the Yorkies, a hamburger, etc. Prompt and incredibly friendly, courteous service; a warm welcoming atmosphere at the pub, with the owner often present and willing to chat. Even when every seat is taken (which is often the case!), the service is first-rate.
Product availability....first 3 beers I attempted to order off the menu were not available. Product prep...burger burned...toppings so overpowering you could taste nothing else...bun stone cold...fries so over salted in kitchen they were inedible. Cola seemed to not have correct syrup strength...watery. Service...half the meal and drink being left uneaten illicited exactly zero question or query from the server re my enjoyment of the meal. Unacceptable.
food okay. seafood chowder more broth than anything else. steak and kidney pie fair, certainly not offensive, but sorta dinty moore-ish. toffee bread pudding was great. beer list was very good....
We expected a wonder meal and experience as the Pub was recommended by our hotel. It has a nice ambiance. Live music was playing. I orderd my favorite pub fare, fish and chips. How can you go wrong ordering fish and chips at an English Pub. Wow! The batter was thick and dry like an old wool sock. The piece of fish buried inside was miniscule. I naturally complained and the waiter promised a new piece. Some 30 minutes later after I had finished all the fries and cole slaw the new piece of fish arrived. It was a duplicate of the first one. Of course I wasn't charged for the meal but I left hungry and disappointed. Hopefully this was an isolated incident. I can't believe this is the way the fish is always prepared. It just boggles my mind.
Great place, excellent service, interestingmenu and lots of Canadian craft beers. Frequently live music on weekends.
