If you love food and visit the South Coast, you must eat at The River. It is an excellent combination of food, service, and location that is also completely fitting with its surrounds. On my most recent visit for lunch, we had pork rillettes, a corn veloute, salmon, and a pork fillet with polenta. Everything was fabulous, and served with a friendly local smile. The wine choice is good (not large, but broad enough) and hits the right balance between local (as close as Murrumbateman) and fine. There is a daily prix fixe lunch and regular local food specials. It's not cheap but is totally reasonable for what you get. I live in France and if I could eat this well for this money in Paris I would be there every month. There is a reason they got their hat back. (Note: it's not really a French restaurant, as Google currently claims, but an Australian restaurant with French influences, including a couple of French wines.) The Hat is well deserved!!! We love the offering, and will be back again soon! We introduced a friend to the River recently and he is thinking of moving to Moruya to be able to go more often.
What a find! Innovative food with great use of local produce. Perfect location with simple and attentive service. The team at The River appear to have worked hard to deliver the best of the south coast. Our lunch was a relaxed and memorable occasion. JP
