Chocolate Bar

We went to this place on the recommendation of a local. When we got to the door the host forewarned us that she could get us seated but the service might be a little slow. There was 2 of us, I got a turtle martini and my wife got a Creamsicle martini. We shared a grilled cheese and the fondue. The service was indeed slow but we were warned and the food more than made up for it. Everything about the food, drinks and dessert was amazing. Excellent flavor, the grilled cheese wasn't really greasy. The tomato bisque was so amazing. Each time we ordered something new I wondered if they could top what we had and they certainly did. A little patience was more than worth it here.
I have never been treated so poorly at a restaurant before. Sunday night (May 26) my friends and I were going out for my birthday and wanted to start the celebration there. We show up ready and excited around 9, there was no one there to greet us and after a minute of us standing there at the door wondering what to do we sit down on the couch. We notice there is a waitress that can clearly see us standing there, but instead of coming over to us she continues her conversation with the bartender. That conversation lasted a few minutes and then she starts heading our way. We think she is heading towards us but then she just completely ignors us. My friends and I just wanted to have some drink and chocolate but that never happened. After being treated so poorly we took our buisness elsewhere. The service that we experienced is something I have never had there. Usually the staff is very fun and outgoing. I was very disappointed.
We have been to the chocolate bar a number of times and have have excellent experiences each time. We were helped promptly and treated with respect. They have excellent specialty martinis and even offered to replace a drink that I didn't care for at no additional charge to me. Their portions on their appetizers and desserts are very satisfying. The staff are all friendly, clean cut, and professional. I have had no complaints and only good times whenever I've been. A good evening is guaranteed if you choose to spend it at the Chocolate Bar. They also validate parking for the parking garage on first street, which is very convenient.
No, the bar is not made of chocolate. When this bar opened, it raised the, uh, you know standard, for all bars in Reno. This was before 210 North and Divine Ultra and Grand Sierra. I mean before this, decor was all about putting nailing a fishing rod to a wall or a jug or a putting a few books on a shelf high up on a wall. This place revolutionized Reno. Unfortunately, its location is not the best. But I guess that all depends on what you want it to be. It's perfect to take a date, perfect for women to hang out early in the evening. It sucks as a pick up place, because there are not enough bar stools and room behind the bar stools to mingle, and since there's mostly couples and tables of women, you kind of look stupid there standing with your beer checking out the scene, with one other creepy dude at the other end of the bar doing the same. If you want truffles and choco martinis though, and you want to hang out at a very cool looking place, then this is perfect. The original owner was hot, but married, but hot. Yeah, but if you want to take your guy friends out on the town, go to a sports bar or a strip joint, unless they love chocolate.
Despite the novelty of this place, and love it receives from the women of the Reno area, I have several problems with this place. -Uncomfortable seating. I'm sure it was a choice of aesthetics, but most of the seating in the place is padded bench seats without a back rest. In the several times I've been the the Chocolate Bar, I found myself extremely uncomfortable after about 30 minutes. I got annoyed having to alternate between leaning forward and leaning back. -Small tables. Again, I'm sure it comes down to aesthetics, but if you have any more than 3 people sharing a table, you'll start having a hard time finding space to put down a glass. -Service. It's been a few months since I've been in there, so maybe it's changed. It seems as though the wait time to get a drink was a bit excessive. Ultimately being a guy in his 20's I realize that I'm not exactly the Bar's targeted demographic, but it seem that the place is still fairly overrated and over-hyped. I should add that the drinks are acceptable, and within the price range you'd expect.
