Gasthof Alter Fuchs
Reviews

My son and I, from Boston, Mass and are foodies. We had a fabulous lunch here. We've been eating typical Bavarian food for days now, and we were hoping for something a little inspired. We found it here. We also found super friendly staff (everyone we met there) that obviously like to work there, and a pleasant, slightly offbeat interior (some high tables with old wooden stools that were pretty cool). We ate their "Wedding Soup" (my son thinks that this may have been the best dish, a sour thinly-sliced beef dish (they suggested pumpkin seed oil as a garnish-who knew?--and it was terrific), and the pork "gordon bleu" (cordon bleu). Every dish stood out from the usual. Can't recommend this place highly enough.

Highly recommended. We plan on coming here first when we return to Salzburg. Good food, excellent service, even if it was crowded.

On the good side, the Alte Fuchs is a traditional and well-established restaurant in Salzburg and attracts not only tourists, but also some locals like myself. The ambient is really nice, rustic but with a dash of irony, and the service was good and waiters friendly. Good beers and other local drinks add to the good aspects. On the down-side, (food-wise), we had spinach dumplings with cheese sauce, wild boar schnitzel on cabbage and pork roast (Schweinsbraten), all rather traditional, not too sophisticated dishes. The spinach dumplings were served cold, but upon complaint immediately taken back and warmed up with an apology; still, they were swimming in a pool of liquid butter; the wild boar schnitzel contained a lot of cartilage and was of poor quality, also very heavy and clearly warmed up after having been fried a long time ago; the cabbage looked unappealing and was boiled to death; the Schweinsbraten was alright, over-all, the quality does not justify the prices. None of our dishes were prepared freshly (we got there around 2 pm, so not at the typical lunch-time, but still). Conclusion: not the worst experience ever, but not that great either - next time in the area, we will try something else.

The Wurstvariation (mixed sausages) was fantastic and if you manage to find room for dessert I recommend the Mozartknödel.

Down in the basement with steins of beer and large pretzels aplenty. I got the Baurnpfandl (farmer's pan) which is a heap of roasted potatoes, vegetables, bacon and sausage slices, with a fried egg and laid on top (like an Austrian bibimbap). Masterpiece. I also endorse the wedding soup, which is like a nice homemade matzoh ball soup, plus bits of beef and sausage.
